Zin and Co

This energetic and buoyant film from Pierre Jolivet is an engaging study into the obstacles which young people face in life. With a realistic, yet humourous tone, it has much to say about contemporary France.

Twenty-year-old Zim (Adrien Jolivet) is a likeable lad from a low-income suburb of Paris. He and his best pals - the chubby Arthur (Yannick Nasso) an automotive apprentice, and Cheb (Mhamed Arezki), the product of a happy interracial marriage - often eat at the Tunisian sandwich shop, where the spunky Safia (Naidra Ayadi) waits tables. After a minor vehicle accident, Zim tests positive for marijuana. As a ‘two-time’ offender, he finds that he’ll end up in prison unless he can get a full time job. The only one he can find requires him to report ten days later, with a car, and a driver’s license – and of course he has neither. But Zim, ever industrious, has a plan.

ZIM AND CO is hugely engaging and entertaining from the first frame to the last, employing an infectious, exuberant style. The characters are well drawn and easy to like, but young Jolivet emerges as the breakout star.
