Time To Leave

Prolific director François Ozon’s TIME TO LEAVE is a beautifully examined, emotionally bracing drama about a young man confronting his mortality, featuring subtly powerful performances from a stellar cast, and a restrained visual aesthetic which drives the events home stridently.

Paris-based fashion photographer Romain (Melvil Poupand) has it all – a cute boyfriend (Christian Sengewald), a beautiful apartment and a fast-growing reputation. However, after an incident at work, he tragically learns he has only a few months to live. Reacting differently to how one might expect, Romain doesn’t tell anyone, and actually takes steps to isolate himself. The single exception is to confide in his grandmother (the legendary Jeanne Moreau in a rare screen performance) - not just because they’re close (she was an outrageous bohemian in her own day, and feels a great rapport for her openly gay grandson), but because he senses she’s near enough to her own death to understand his feelings…

TIME TO LEAVE is incredibly moving – it’s Ozon’s most humane and sincerely compassionate film, arguably his best yet – and lingers long in the memory.
