Emmanuelle Bercot’s directorial feature is a knockout – an intelligent, unnerving and highly accomplished look at celebrity culture.
Lucie (rising star Isild Le Besco) is an ordinary teenager who lives with her equally celebrity-obsessed mother (Noémie Lvovsky). Her life revolves around Lauren (the stunning Emmanuelle Seigner) – a gorgeous platinum-blonde pop star - and dreaming about her is Lucie’s escape from the numbing boredom of provincial French life. One day Lucie receives the shock of her life when Lauren visits her home as a surprise for a television show, and Lucie is rendered completely speechless. Mortified and humiliated, she heads to Paris for a second chance, but what she discovers is a world far different than the one she’d imagined while gazing up at the posters on her bedroom wall…
BACKSTAGE is a thought-provoking look at stardom and the world that travels in its wake: publicists, managers, producers, guards and, in Lucie’s case, fanatical groupies. Bercot strips away the glittery façade of fame and takes the viewer on an eye-opening backstage trip into the mind of stars and their adoring fans.
